Swoopers, (also known as Swoops for short), are bats that are recurring enemies in the Mario Kart series.

They hang idly on the ceiling and only slows down racers if they come near. If they do, they fly towards the player. They usually come in large numbers and fly through the caves, they aren't that menacing though as they do little to impede your speed. A Swooper can be knocked back with the use of a Shell or Starman.

Swoopers are typically purple with their eyes being black lines that make them appear to be squinting.

History[]

Mario Kart DS[]

Swoopers appear in N64 Banshee Boardwalk. They appear in large flocks that fly in the opposite direction that all racers go. Although they are not a real hazard, Swoopers can get in the way of any incoming karts, slowing them down. Swoopers replace the generic Bats that were found in the original Mario Kart 64 course.

Mario Kart Wii[]

Swoopers reappear in Mario Kart Wii. They act in the same way as seen in Mario Kart DS. They only appear in Wario's Gold Mine and Dry Dry Ruins, making their lair in the entrance to the mine in the former and in the entrance and exit to the temple in the latter, with the exit having them go with the racers. Additionally, racers can wipe out these bats by using shells or stars.

Mario Kart 7[]

Swoopers reappear in Mario Kart 7 in Rock Rock Mountain. They behave in the same way as in the previous games, slowing down racers in their way. An unlockable glider based them also appears in the game. The glider is also named after the Swooper.

Mario Kart 8/Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

Swoopers once again reappear as obstacles in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. They appear in Mount Wario, N64 Yoshi Valley and Wii Wario's Gold Mine. In Hyrule Circuit, they are replaced by Keese to fit with the theme of the course. Keese are maroon coloured and their eyes are yellow for distinguishment. In the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC, Swoopers can also be seen in N64 Choco Mountain.
