A Stingby (ハッチン) is a flying opponent of Mario and co. first in Super Mario 3D Land and its sequel, Super Mario 3D World. This bee-like opponent may look intimidating with its stinger, but it's slow speed and low flying altitude make it an easy enemy to defeat.

Honeybee Hive in Mario Kart 7 marks the entry of Stingbys into the Mario Kart series. In this honey-filled Battle Stage, Stingbys fly around in packs, stinging anyone who dares run into them.

Characteristics[]

Characterized by yellow and brown stripes, Stingbys have very bulbous bodies with relatively small white wings to hover them around (perhaps that's why they can only fly a couple feet up in the air...) They have short, black legs protruding from the back, and their eyes are rather large, covering most of their head. Their main weapon, notably integral, is a large stinger, which, although it may seem dull, can run someone through and through.

Stingby (4)

Honey Queen getting a little too close to a Stingby.

In Honey Queen's Honeybee Hive stage, posses of 3-5 (usually 4) Stingbys can be seen flying around the multiple combs of the course in single file lines. Any racer who is unlucky enough to run into them going at a high speed will lose a Balloon or Coins. Oddly enough though, if you touch a Stingby while driving at a slow speed, they will merely push you out of the way. Other character hazards Items will destroy you even with the slightest touch...

Trivia![]

  • Stingbys' only other appearance is in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker in a bonus stage from Super Mario 3D World, Conkdor Canyon.
  • In Mario Kart 7, Stingbys are a little darker shaded.
  • "Hacchin" (ハッチン), the Japanese name for the Stingby, is a variation of the word for bee, "Hachi" ( 蜂).
