Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (abbreviated to MK8DX) is a kart-racing game exclusive to the Nintendo Switch. It is the enhanced port of Mario Kart 8 and was released worldwide on April 28, 2017.

This game includes the Inklings as new playable characters along with three returning characters from previous games: Dry Bones, King Boo and Bowser Jr. In addition, the Shine Thief and Bob-omb Blast battle games from Double Dash!! return as playable options in Battle Mode along with a new mode, Renegade Roundup.

Character Unlock Criteria

  • Gold Mario: Complete all cups in 200cc

New Karts

The Koopa Clown returns from Mario Kart 7, while 2 new ATVs, the Splat Buggy and Inkstriker have been added.

New Items

The Boo and Feather return from Mario Kart DS and Super Mario Kart, respectively. Feather is exclusive to battle mode.

Double Items

Racers can now hold two items, similar to Double Dash.

amiibo Compatibility

All amiibo compatible with Mario Kart 8 are compatible once again in MK8DX, with some new features. Tapping any Animal Crossing Series amiibo will give you the Animal Crossing Mii Racing Suit, and tapping the Boy or Girl Inkling amiibo will give you the Boy and Girl Inkling Mii Racing Suits, respectively.

Other New Features and Changes

  • Ultra Mini-Turbo (pink sparks) are available after orange sparks. This feature is only enabled when Smart Steering is off.
  • Course maps are now white instead of blue.
  • Item Spy is removed to prevent players from cheating.
  • If smart steering mode is toggled on, there will be an antenna sticking out the rear of their kart.
  • The backbeat that plays when the player is in 1st place is absent.
  • Additionally the battle mode (due to it being revamped) from the original game as well as Stamps also from the original game are absent.
  • Confetti appears at the starting line of races.
  • Fire hopping no longer works.
