Luigi aids his older twin brother Mario in his numerous quests to save the kidnapped Peach from Bowser (though he likes Princess Daisy. Guess he's just a nice, helpful guy) in the Super Mario games.

Since his first appearance in Super Mario Bros., Luigi is the secondary protagonist (and even been the main character in games such as Luigi's Mansion) of the preceding titles, including the widely-known Mario Kart series. He is a playable character in every installment. The Mach 8 is his signature kart according to a trailer. He also has his own series of games called Luigi's Mansion and New Super Luigi Bros. U.

Characteristics[]

Luigi is noticeably taller than his brother, Mario, and he is also a little bit more lean. And also, a bit heavier. Yeah, he works out. They both have Italian accents. Luigi wears brown shoes and overalls like Mario, but Luigi's overalls are noticeably a darker shade of blue. Luigi has a green long sleeved shirt and wears white gloves. The first 3 Mario & Luigi games also confirm that Luigi has red-striped socks that look like candy canes. He has a brown mustache and brown hair. And he has his own special green hat with his initial (L) on it.

Appearances in Mario Kart games[]

Super Mario Kart[]

Luigi makes his Mario Kart debut in the series' first installment, Super Mario Kart, as a mediumweight racer along with Mario, being under the category "The Bros.". During races, Luigi can use his special item when he is a CPU, which is the Starman just like Mario, which grants him invincibility and speed. and his rival seems to be Yoshi.

Mario Kart 64[]

Luigi returns in Mario Kart 64, and just like Mario, he is still in the mediumweight class. He gets his own track, under the name Luigi Raceway (or Luigi Circuit in the Japanese version), which is in the Mushroom Cup.

Mario Kart: Super Circuit[]

In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Luigi is still in the mediumweight class, meaning that his stats are balanced. Despite his description saying "Great Steering", Luigi just has balanced stats. He receives another track based on him, this time it is called Luigi Circuit, which is in the game's Lightning Cup. This track takes place when it's raining.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![]

In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Luigi is Mario's default partner, and just like the latter, Luigi is a mediumweight once again, meaning he can use karts in his weight class unless a heavy character is paired up with him, where he is forced to use a heavyweight kart. His personal kart is the Green Fire, which is the green variant of the Red Fire, and is also unlockable. This kart has good Speed, but low Acceleration. His circuit reappears in the game's Mushroom Cup. Luigi's younger self debuts in the series in this game.

Mario Kart DS[]

In Mario Kart DS, Luigi's remains as a mediumweight, being alongside Mario, Princess Daisy and Waluigi. His karts are the iconic Poltergust 4000, being based on the Poltergust 3000 in the Luigi's Mansion series, as well as the Standard LG and the unlockable Streamliner. His personal course is Luigi's Mansion, which is the last track of the Mushroom Cup. GCN Luigi Circuit and GBA Luigi Circuit reappear as retro tracks in the Shell Cup and Leaf Cup, respectively.

Starting of the game, Luigi can only choose from his personal karts. Once the player completes all cups in either the Nitro or Retro Grand Prix on 150cc, he can choose from Yoshi's Cucumber, Donkey Kong's Wildlife, Wario's Dragonfly and R.O.B's iconic ROB-BLS, before being able to choose between every other kart upon completing all Mirror Mode cups.

Mario Kart Wii[]

In Mario Kart Wii, Luigi maintains his status as a Medium-sized racer, meaning he can drive any of the Medium Karts and Bikes. While his signature color remains green, his secondary color, like Mario, is blue. His personal course is Luigi Circuit, which is a track in the Mushroom Cup, just like Luigi Raceway and the Double Dash!! iteration of the track. His signature vehicle is the Sprinter, and Baby Luigi also returns in this game, but this time Baby Luigi is an unlockable character.

Mario Kart 7[]

In Mario Kart 7, Luigi is a Medium racer for the 7th time, being alongside Mario and the player's Mii. He doesn't have a personal course in this game, but N64 Luigi Raceway and DS Luigi's Mansion do appear in as a retro track in the game's Shell Cup.

Mario Kart 8/Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

In Mario Kart 8, Luigi makes another appearance in the mediumweight class, sharing stats with Mario, Iggy and Ludwig. His signature kart is the Mach 8, known to be driving the kart with the Slim tires in the game. Baby Luigi also returns in this game.

In the Nintendo Switch port, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Luigi's role is unchanged, although his stats have been slightly altered, and now his stats are shared with only Iggy and later on, Kamek as well.

Mario Kart Tour[]

In Mario Kart Tour, Luigi is a Super Driver whose special item is the Fire Flower, just like Mario. He doesn't appear until the Halloween Tour, where DS Luigi's Mansion returns as a retro track and his karts, the Poltergust 4000 and the Mach 8, also return.

Overtime, Luigi has received multiple outfits, and N64 Luigi Raceway and GBA Luigi Circuit eventually reappear as retro tracks.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit[]

Luigi is a playable character in Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, where he has is very own connectable kart for use in this game, just like Mario.

Trivia![]

LUIGI DEATH STARE

They see Luigi rollin', they hate it...

DEATH STARE

First time Nintendo ever referenced a meme, you don't get that very often...

  • Furious that the "Year of Luigi" was declared over, the green-clad plumber is hitting the tracks with some serious attitude. A meme has emerged where images and clips depict Luigi giving his now famous 'Death Stare' at other opponents as he drives past them, usually after hitting them with an item.
    • The meme was referenced in Paper Mario: Color Splash once Mario, Huey, and Luigi reach Black Bowser's Castle, Huey references the meme by mentioning the death stare.
    • Videos of this meme were often paired with the song Ridin'
  • Luigi is one of the six characters to appear in every Mario Kart installment, along with Mario, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Toad, and Bowser.
  • Luigi is voiced by Charles Martinet who also voiced his brother, Mario alongside their baby counterparts as well as Wario and Waluigi.
