Description[]

It is in the shape of a green Yoshi Egg, with a yellow rim around the top, two gray engine pipes and a silver chassis underneath it.

History[]

Mario Kart DS[]

MKDS Egg1

The Egg 1 debuted in Mario Kart DS, as Yoshi's default Exclusive Kart, with his other karts including his standard kart, the Standard YS, and his unlockable Exclusive Kart, the Cucumber. Initially, only Yoshi can use the Egg 1. However, if the player wins gold cups in the 150cc Nitro or Retro Grand Prix, it becomes open to Princess Daisy and R.O.B. It becomes open to all characters once the player gets gold cups in all Mirror Mode cups.

Yoshi's Egg 1 is perhaps one of the most popular vehicles at all levels of play, due to its excellent balance of speed, acceleration, and handling as well as its very long Mini-Turbo. While it has rather low drift, this is not too important in DS as karts can hop tightly around corners, and its high handling compensates for it. Although its low weight (the lowest base weight in the game) can prove a hindrance in Grand Prix and VS modes, its advantages far outweigh the occasional risk of being bumped off the course, and once the player unlocks expanded karts for all characters, they can simply choose a heavier driver to offset this weakness completely. It is also one of the best snaking karts, along with the Dry Bomber, ROB-BLS, and Poltergust 4000, Yoshi but all of those aforementioned karts have courses where they are particularly weak, while the Egg 1 can put up competitive times on every course in the game. Because of this, it is almost always chosen for "all-cup tour" (32-track VS) speedruns.

In Time Trials, the Egg 1 is seen as a very strong mid-ground choice among the best karts. Unlike the Dry Bomber, Yoshi's Egg 1 does not compromise as much speed for its great cornering abilities and is significantly faster. However, its offroad, while strong, is nowhere near as strong as the Dry Bomber's, and at times the Dry Bomber's even stronger cornering may be necessary to traverse particularly tight turns or offroad-laden areas. Additionally, the Egg 1 is significantly slower than the BLS, making it suboptimal for most courses without offroad (except those that require the Egg 1's cornering, most notably Waluigi Pinball and GCN Baby Park).

Nonetheless, the Egg 1 remains a great choice for almost all tracks in the game and sees widespread use at top-level play, arguably the most out of any kart due to its versatility all the way until world record level. There, it is beaten out by the ROB-BLS, holding 10 3-lap world records as opposed to the BLS's 19.

Mario Kart 7[]

The Egg 1 makes its return in six years with this installment of Mario Kart. As expected, its part increases acceleration and mini-turbos; unexpectedly, it also increases drift, even though its drift was low in DS (which allowed for tight snaking.) It also has increased maneuverability in the sea and sky. However, it decreases weight and land speed.

During Grand Prix races, a computer-controlled Peach or Wario may occasionally use the Egg 1, usually equipped with Monster and Roller tires respectively.

The Gold Egg 1 is a color variant of the Egg 1. It is all gold, and the tires used are a gold variant of the Roller tires. It is classified as a High-End kart. Unlike the Egg 1, it increases the speed boosts and points earned for performing Jump Boosts.

This kart was exclusive to the Cooking Tour, which can be obtained via the Special Pipe.

Trivia![]

  • Strangely enough, this kart uses the name Egg 1, despite being the only kart in the entire game and series to use the name Egg. A pink polka-dotted version of this kart was found in Mario Kart DS's coding. It is possible that kart was called "Egg 2" and the name of Egg 1 was accidentally not changed to Egg when "Egg 2" was removed.
  • Alternatively, the name could be a pun on F-1 (Formule 1).
