A Balloon is an Item that represents a life in Balloon Battle. In Super Mario Kart, these balloons rotate around the kart like Triple Green Shells, but in Mario Kart 64 and onwards, they are tied to the back of your vehicle. They pop one by one if you are hit by Items or a vehicle using a Star.

In Mario Kart DS, at the beginning of the battle, you start with one and must inflate the rest, having four spare balloons to inflate. In this game, if you lose all your balloons, you are eliminated for the rest of the round. In Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7, you have three and play until time runs out. If you lose all your balloons, then you are regenerated again with all three, but you lose a point. In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the balloons have a series logo printed on it and competitors can be knocked out before time runs out. After they're out, they are a ghost and can continue to hit players and such until time runs out. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe however, you once again play until time runs out this time you start off with 5 balloons and if you are sidelined, you lose half your points and respawn with only 3 balloons. Balloons are also in Bob-omb Blast.

Aside from Balloon Battle, Balloons are also in Mario Kart DS's Mission Mode. They are used as lives against boss missions. You only get 3, and there are no uninflated balloons in storage.

In Mario Kart 64, if the player loses all the balloons, they will turn into a Mini Bomb Kart that can attack other alive racers.

Balloon Colors[]

In Single Player, the player's balloons will always be red. In Local Multiplayer, P1 will have yellow, P2 will have cyan, P3 will have pink, and P4 will have green. In Online and Wireless Multiplayer, balloon colors are randomized. If you are playing on teams, the balloons are your team's color (red or blue). If you steal enough balloons with a Mushroom, you can get an array of balloon colors.

  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Lime
  • Green
  • Cyan
  • Blue
  • Purple
  • Pink
  • Brown
  • White
  • Black

In Mario Kart 7, each racer's balloon's colors are based off of what position they're listed in on either the "Racers for next match" or "Battle settings" screens:

  1. Red
  2. Blue
  3. Lime
  4. Yellow
  5. Purple
  6. Cyan
  7. White
